The option list on an order looks like addition, but every item on it actually changes how the machine is operated, and also changes what has to be prepared on site. Treating them as upgrades often means finding out after payment that they are awkward to work with. An option is essentially a trade-off: one more function also means one more item that has to be maintained, commissioned and learned by the people who use it. Both sides of the account have to be calculated together.

PLC and touch panel: the operation is concentrated, and so is the dependency

With the PLC and touch panel as options, parameter display and operation are concentrated on a single screen: temperature, vacuum level and running status can be seen at a glance, with no switching back and forth between several instruments. The cost is that the way of operating changes: what used to be done by turning a knob and watching indicator lamps now requires reading the interface and following the process in two steps. When shifts change, or when the machine is handed over at short notice to someone unfamiliar with it, the chance of error may actually increase. The touch panel also occupies part of the cabinet face, so the cabinet layout has to be arranged in advance.

Online moisture meter: a continuous reading is not the same as the sample analysis

The point of moving from sampling and laboratory analysis to a continuous reading is that the trend can be seen without waiting for the laboratory report, and the degassing time and heating can be adjusted in time when the water content is high. But the online instrument gives a continuous trend value, which is not on the same basis as the sample analysis under GB/T 7600; the two values will not always agree, and whether the result is acceptable is still judged on the basis of the sample analysis. The instrument itself also needs regular calibration. When the probe is contaminated or not properly installed, the reading is biased, and if the parameters are then adjusted according to that reading, the judgement itself is led astray.

Frequency converter: one more adjustable item, and one more commissioning task

The frequency converter adjusts the speed of the oil supply and of the pump. When the flow demand is small, the pump speed can be reduced, which cuts unproductive circulation and heat generation. Its cost is one more variable in the operating parameters: the heating and vacuum behaviour at different speeds has to be tested again, and the curve set at the factory cannot be applied directly. If this step is skipped on site, the frequency converter is only a knob that can be turned at will, and the position at which it suits the process is known only after it has been tried.

The flow totaliser and the flow meter reading are not on the same basis

With a flow totaliser installed, the processed volume becomes a figure that can be accumulated: how much oil was processed over a period of time is recorded and traceable, which helps to check the workload and to plan the replacement cycle of the consumables. But the flow totaliser and the flow meter on the pipe do not read the same quantity: the former totals the oil that has passed through the filtration stage, the latter shows the instantaneous flow. The two values are not required to agree, and neither of them will equal the nominal processing capacity of 6000 L/h on the nameplate at the same time.

The structural configuration is a trade-off, not a grade

Mobile, stationary, trailer-mounted, open type, canopy type, fully enclosed: what is being chosen is the enclosure and the transport conditions, not the performance level. The open type and the canopy type suit sites with a fixed layout, good ventilation and little need for shielding; the fully enclosed type suits workshops with heavy dust, where protection against rain and dust is needed or where people move about frequently, at the cost of a larger footprint and higher ventilation requirements; the trailer-mounted and mobile types solve the question of transfer, at the cost of needing somewhere to store it and to tow it.

Four kinds of site information to give the manufacturer before the order is placed

Whether the options can be matched accurately depends on how much site information is at hand when the order is placed. The oil analysis report determines the starting point of the temperature control range: the temperature control range of the TYA series is 45–80 °C, when the water content is high the upper limit is reduced to 70 °C, and the working vacuum is -0.08 MPa. The site power supply conditions should state the voltage and frequency: the ZYD-100 uses three-phase 380V / 50Hz with a total power of 72 + 5 kW. The site dimensions and the doorway determine whether the equipment can enter, and ventilation and drainage determine where the exhaust gas and the waste oil go. If one piece of this information is missing, the options are only a guess.

The arrangement of the heating, oil transfer and vacuum units determines where the options are installed and how much space is left inside the frame
  • Map every item on the option list to a specific use on site; an item whose use cannot be stated is left out of the order.
  • Confirm the standard fittings and the options separately: phase failure and phase sequence protection, audible and visual alarm shutdown on over-pressure, infrared level and foam detection combined with automatic defoaming, and far infrared carbon fibre heating are within the standard scope.
  • The vacuum unit consists of the X-100 vacuum pump and the JRP-500 roots blower, and the oil transfer is carried out by the ZH screw oil pump; these are matters on the equipment side and do not need to be purchased again.
  • Supply everything in one go when the order is placed: the oil analysis report, the site power supply conditions, the site and doorway dimensions, and the ventilation and drainage conditions.
What an option buys is one capability and one complication. If both are acknowledged in advance, the machine will not come as a surprise at acceptance.
